Job Description

The Position

Under the general supervision of the Protector of Culture in the Stewardship and Territorial Land Management Division, the Museum Assistant provides support to the department. The Assistant will work in the museum to educate visitors about the shíshálh Nation's history, participate in curation activities, and archive materials.

This is a full-time term position with hours of work adjusted for two seasonal periods: Peak Season (June 1 to September 30), Tuesday – Saturday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Off Season (October 1 to May 31), Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. This position is through May 31, 2027, with the possibility of an extension.

The Candidate:

  • Provide tours to the visitors, educating them on shíshálh history.
  • Book museum and other tours.
  • Collect donations.
  • Clean and organize the museum.
  • Support cultural programming as requested, which includes the following:
  • Assisting in the coordination of community celebration events (Amalgamation Days, National Indigenous Peoples Day, Self-Government Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Assisting in the coordination of Elders events such as Nation-to-Nation Elder gatherings and Annual BC Elders Gathering.
  • Assisting and supporting in the coordination and implementation of shishalh Cultural ceremonies.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of shishalh Cultural workshops.
  • Archive artifacts and documents in the museum as instructed.
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of shíshálh history.
  • Bachelor of Arts in anthropology, archeology, or other social sciences preferred or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of two years of post-secondary education is an asset.
  • A minimum of two years of experience with First Nations cultural programs is an asset.
  • Experience working in a museum or providing tours is preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team.
  • Ability to engage the public professionally and openly.
  • Willingness to work Saturdays and the occasional Sundays.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to establish rapport with people of all educational and occupational backgrounds.
  • A Criminal Record Check will be conducted on the successful candidate.
